But here’s what’s keeping me up at night: we’re not talking about phishing emails or fake tech support calls anymore. We’re talking about AI that can literally become your CEO in a video conference.
This week, I came across some numbers that made me pause. According to a 2025 TechRadar Pro report citing the Ponemon Institute, over 51% of security professionals now say deepfake threats targeting executives are a top concern—up from 43% just last year. That’s not just a trend. That’s a fundamental shift in how attackers are thinking about social engineering.
Real-World Attack: When Your CEO Isn’t Your CEO
Let me paint you a picture of what we’re dealing with. Earlier this year, a finance director at a multinational company received a video call from what appeared to be their CFO. Same voice, same mannerisms, even the same coffee mug sitting on the desk. The “CFO” requested an urgent wire transfer for a confidential acquisition deal.
The finance director authorized a $25 million transfer.
The real CFO was on vacation in another country and had no idea what happened until three days later.

This isn’t science fiction—it’s happening right now. The attack combined voice cloning from publicly available earnings calls, facial mapping from corporate headshots, and enough research to make the conversation completely believable.
The Technical Reality: How Deepfake Attacks Actually Work
Here’s what makes this so dangerous—the barrier to entry has collapsed. Five years ago, creating convincing deepfakes required Hollywood-level resources. Today? A decent GPU and some YouTube tutorials.
- Voice Cloning: Attackers need roughly 3-5 minutes of clear audio to clone a voice convincingly. Think about how much audio your executives have publicly available—earnings calls, conference presentations, podcast interviews. It’s all training data.
- Video Deepfakes: Modern techniques can map facial expressions and movements from just a handful of photos. LinkedIn headshots, company websites, social media—there’s plenty of source material.
- Real-Time Processing: The scary part? This doesn’t require pre-recorded videos anymore. Attackers can run deepfake software during live video calls, essentially wearing a digital mask of your executive.
- Behavioral Research: Social media, press interviews, and company communications provide the personality details needed to make conversations authentic.
Put it all together, and you’ve got an attacker who can literally become any executive in your organization during a video call.
Why Traditional Security Fails Here
This is where our usual playbook breaks down. We’ve trained employees to spot phishing emails, suspicious links, and social engineering calls. But what do you do when the person on the screen looks, sounds, and acts exactly like your boss?
- Email Security: Doesn’t help when the attack happens over video conference
- Multi-Factor Authentication: Useless if the attacker is convincing someone to override normal procedures
- Network Monitoring: Can’t detect a legitimate user making an authorized transaction
- Security Awareness Training: Most programs don’t even mention deepfakes, let alone prepare employees for them
The attack vector completely bypasses our technical controls and targets the one thing we can’t patch—human trust.
What Attackers Are Actually Targeting
Based on the incidents I’m tracking, threat actors are focusing on three main scenarios:
- Financial Fraud: Wire transfers, invoice approvals, emergency payments—anything requiring executive authorization for large amounts of money.
- Access Requests: “I need you to give [attacker’s accomplice] administrative access to the system for this urgent project.”
- Information Extraction: “Can you send me the latest client contracts? I need them for the board meeting this afternoon.”
The common thread? Urgent requests that bypass normal procedures, leveraging authority and time pressure to overcome skepticism.
Building Defense Against Executive Identity Compromise
So what do we actually do about this? It’s not hopeless, but it requires rethinking how we approach identity verification.
- Multi-Channel Verification: Any high-value request made via video call should require confirmation through a second channel—text, email, or in-person verification.
- Contextual Authentication: Establish shared knowledge that only the real executive would know—recent conversations, personal details, or company information not publicly available.
- Process Controls: No matter who’s asking, certain financial thresholds should always require multiple approvals and waiting periods.
- Technical Indicators: Train your team to watch for video quality inconsistencies, audio delays, or unusual background artifacts that might indicate deepfake technology.
- Security Culture: Create an environment where questioning unusual requests—even from executives—is not only acceptable but encouraged.
The Bigger Picture
Here’s what really worries me about this trend: it’s not just about the technology. It’s about the erosion of trust in digital communications. When we can’t believe what we see and hear, how do we conduct business remotely? How do we maintain organizational relationships?
We’re entering a phase where “seeing is believing” no longer applies. Every video call, every voice message, every digital interaction now requires a level of skepticism that fundamentally changes how we communicate.
The threat actors know this. They’re not just stealing money—they’re attacking the foundation of digital trust that our entire remote work economy depends on.
Final Thoughts
A decade ago, we worried about employees clicking malicious links. Today, we’re dealing with AI that can impersonate anyone with enough public data to work with. The evolution of social engineering has accelerated beyond what most organizations are prepared to handle.
The good news? Awareness is still our first line of defense. Once your team knows these attacks exist and understands how they work, they become much harder to execute successfully.
The bad news? This technology is only getting better, cheaper, and more accessible.
